Hydrogeological Investigation

What is hydrogeologic investigation?

A hydrogeological survey is an investigation of the hydrologic and geologic parameters at the subsurface level in a particular area. Hydrogeological maps may be formulated with the data gathered during such a study.Hydrogeology is defined as the science of the occurrence, distribution, and movement of water below the Earth's surface. From: Past Glacial Environments (Second Edition), 2018.

A hydrogeological investigation is a study of the hydrologic and geologic parameters at the subsurface level in a particular area. The purpose of most hydrogeological investigations is to locate potential sites for development of an adequate quantity of reasonably good quality.

Hydrogeological investigations can be used for:

  • Locating potential sites for development

  • Near surface disposal of radioactive waste

  • Ensuring the success and safety of tunnelling projects

The step by step process of a hydrogeological survey includes:

  • Borehole drilling using an 8½ inch diameter bit

  • Casing with good quality 6” screens made of steel or uPVC

  • Packing gravel

  • Grouting

  • Cleaning the borehole (development)

  • Test pumping to determine the aquifer properties
